As iOS 8 celebrates its first month from its initial rollout, it would appear that the chances of the software getting jailbroken aren’t too good as of this time.
Time was, iPhone owners could easily expect a jailbreaking tool to roll out for their devices mere months, or even weeks after a new iOS release. But that doesn’t appear to be the case anymore, at this time when Apple is more vigilant than ever in snuffing out jailbreak exploits on iOS when rolling out software updates for its platform. Furthermore, Redditors haven’t said too much about an iOS 8 jailbreak, whereas in the past the jailbreak scene on Reddit would often be quite active when talking about new tools for a new iOS iteration this soon after it rolls out.
With that as a backdrop, a new report from iDigitalTimes emerged this week, as several jailbreak developers broke their silence and updated iPhone users on the possibility of an iOS 8 jailbreak. Sadly, that possibility is quite slim, basing on the tenor of their often cagey comments. For one, jailbreak developer iH8sn0w told the publication that he hasn’t been “interested in public jailbreaks” due to the difficulty in making them, only for the exploits to be found out and “nerfed,” or neutralized by Apple. This seems like the reason why iH8sn0w hasn’t released any jailbreaking solutions in quite some time.
It also wasn’t long ago when the Evad3rs crew was churning out jailbreaking programs for iOS like clockwork, but when Apple released software upgrades for iOS 7, the team seemed to lower its profile and stay away from jailbreaking. Still, many were quite hopeful that they’d be back for an iOS 8 jailbreak. That might not be the plan after all, as crew members told iDigitalTimes that jailbreaking has become “boring.” While the response may be peculiar to some, it shouldn’t come as a surprise, as the jailbreak process has lost a lot of its luster since its salad days in the late 2000s.
A third familiar name, p0sixninja, told iDigitalTimes something similar – he doesn’t have anything planned for iOS 8, and doesn’t expect his fellow jailbreak developers and crews to release similar products in the future.
Still, all is not lost, as the Pangu crew that created the iOS 7.1 jailbreak several months back still has publicly known plans to release a jailbreak for iOS 8. But that might not be an easy task, as Apple was quite quick to nerf that iOS 7.1 jailbreak by killing off many individual exploits. As the present crew wasn’t the actual team behind the previous exploits, that may give them a bigger challenge when trying to jailbreak iOS 8. A recent Weibo post from Pangu suggests that the jailbreak may be coming sometime this fall, so that should be something to watch for, despite the sheer lack of information at this point in the game.
In conclusion, the jailbreaking community may have quieted down a great deal over the past year or so, but users shouldn’t give up all hope for iOS 8 (or iOS 8.1) to get jailbroken at some point in the future.
