Motorola Droid Bionic ICS Soak Test to Kick off on October 19

By Robert Walczak | 10/18/2012

Owners of the Motorola Droid Bionic may finally be able to see the light at the end of the tunnel for their rather troubled smartphones. According to Droid Life, the American manufacturer has already sent out invites for the Droid Bionic’s soak test for its delayed Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update. This was confirmed to Gotta Be Mobile by one of the lucky few to get one of those invites.

From the outset, the Motorola Droid Bionic has brought some disappointment or another, including a delayed release that allowed its competitors to catch up hardware-wise, launching with Android 2.2 Froyo even after Android 2.3 Gingerbread has been out for several months, and getting its Gingerbread update later on.

Motorola has previously promised that the Droid Bionic would enjoy its Ice Cream Sandwich update by the third quarter of this year, but that time-frame has come and passed. Fortunately, the reported soak test suggests that this software update would arrive sooner rather than later, with sources claiming that the first updates would start rolling out to test participants on October 19.

If all goes well, a broader roll-out could come within a few days. Motorola hasn’t given a reason for the delay, but it has already given something of an apology over its handling of the Droid Bionic.

It’s speculated that the issue was related to the host of bugs that plagued the Droid RAZR and Droid RAZR MAXX’s updates to Ice Cream Sandwich, but given that the Droid Bionic is the older of these smartphones, it seems strange that it takes far longer to get its new firmware.
