Motorola Droid Bionic ICS Update Rolling Out Now

By Ken Mildenhall | 10/20/2012

After a missed deadline that tops off over a year’s waiting, owners of the Motorola Droid Bionic finally has something to be happy about. Shortly after Motorola and Verizon indicated that the soak test for the smartphone’s Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update has commenced, the two companies have now indicated that the final update has been officially approved.

Sources say, that the much-awaited ICS update has already started rolling out.

According to Verizon’s official support documents, the Droid Bionic’s Ice Cream Sandwich software package is tagged with the 6.7.246 build number, and Droid-Life claims the update will weigh in at 368MB.

Going by the screenshots, the end product could be roughly similar to the Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Droid RAZR and Droid RAZR MAXX. On top of Android 4.0’s standard features, Motorola’s customizations prominently feature a new lock screen that provides direct shortcuts to the camera and messaging functions.

The update to Android 4.0 ends an unfortunate saga that saw buyers of Motorola’s 2011 flagship smartphone deprived of major software updates for several months. There has been a palpable amount of frustration about Motorola’s handling of the update, particularly considering that its early-2012 flagships already got their Ice Cream Sandwich updates, and its late-2012 flagships are already nearing release.

The bump to Android 4.0 is certainly welcomed, but given that Android 4.1 Jelly Bean has already been out for several months, owners of the handset are probably still unhappy with how phone manufacturers and wireless carriers handle the entire Android update process.
