Samsung Galaxy S6 Rumor Roundup – What We Know as 2014 Draws to Close

The Samsung Galaxy S6 is one of the most talked-about phones that has yet to make its way to the public by way of an official launch, and with the year ending in just one day, we’ve decided to roll up all the hot rumors and size up the Galaxy S6 ahead of its arrival. So what can we expect from Samsung at this point in the game?

Talking about the Galaxy S6’ arrival and release, some rumors have teased the possibility of a debut at the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. However, these rumors may be a tad too wild, considering that CES 2015 starts in just a few weeks from now; there hasn’t been anything solid to truly hint at an extremely early arrival for the Galaxy S6.

The 2015 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona may be a more likely launching pad for the Galaxy S6, and if that’s the case, chances are it could be in stores about six to eight weeks from then, meaning sometime in mid-late April. This would allow a gap of about one year in between flagship phone releases for Samsung, but if poor Galaxy S5 sales continue to be a problem, there’s a chance the Galaxy S6 may be released slightly earlier than expected.

The Galaxy S6’s design is expected to be one of the most significant changes over the Galaxy S5, and that can be inferred by Samsung’s codename for the Galaxy S6 behind the scenes – “Project Zero.” Multiple reports have teased the possibility of a metal body, and even a unibody design not unlike that of the HTC One M8. With the Galaxy A-Series catering to midrange customers, a metal Galaxy S6 could be just what the doctor ordered for flagship phone buyers long disappointed with Samsung’s insistence on plastic.

However, there have also been some whispers of quality assurance issues with Samsung’s unibody cases, which also makes it possible Samsung may go for a metal-framed Galaxy S6. That’s completely different from a metal Galaxy S6, but then again, it could be a start if worse comes to worst.

On the technical side, the Galaxy S6 may come with a 5.5-inch display, but may stick to 1080p display resolution, and not make the leap to 2560 x 1440, or Quad HD. As megapixel count and pixel density tend to be overrated on-paper specs, this may not be a big issue for most consumers, though we’re sure to hear grumblings from those who put too much premium on a phone’s fundamentals.

Rumors tend to vary when it comes to other meat-and-potatoes specs, but most reports agree that the Galaxy S6 may come with a Snapdragon 801 or 805 processor, 3 GB RAM, and a 16- or 20-megapixel rear camera. Front camera quality may be upgraded to 5 megapixels for better-quality selfies. The Galaxy S6 is also likely to ship with Android 5.0 Lollipop out of the box.

Lastly, the Galaxy S6’s feature set/list of selling points is largely unknown at this point in the game, but chances are Samsung will be cooking up something new to keep its Galaxy S line fresh and help make the device a truly “revolutionary” flagship. And on a more basic note, it’s a no-brainer for us to expect NFC and LTE to lead off connectivity options for the Galaxy S6, as well as the return of the fingerprint reader that made its debut on the Galaxy S5.
