Samsung Galaxy S6 Rumor Roundup -Summing Up the Early Expectations for Samsung’s Next Flagship Phone

on

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 release date has come and gone, and so has the Galaxy Note Edge’s release in some markets. The Galaxy S5, which was released several months prior to the Note 4, is still in stores, and largely an afterthought for many. That leaves the Samsung Galaxy S6 as the proverbial “next big thing” for Samsung, and though it does seem way too early to begin any serious talk about the device, rumors have fired up over the past week. And these rumors continue to swirl as we draw closer to the end of 2014. As such, we’ve rounded up those rumors into a tidy little compendium of early Galaxy S6 expectations.

So far, the loudest Galaxy S6 whispers hint at the possibility of the device being a complete “reboot” or refresh. The phone is reportedly known behind closed doors as “Project Zero,” which diverges from Samsung’s usual codenaming strategy; for example, the Galaxy S5 was known by the internal codename “Project K,” while the Galaxy S4 was dubbed “Project J.” This reboot may include a shift to the use of metal as a build material, or a new and bolder design, and while both seem fairly possible at this point in the game, we can only do as much as speculate for now.

A rather interesting, though slightly wild rumor that cropped up earlier this week comes from Korea, where some analysts expect Samsung to include a dual-edged display on the Galaxy S6. This would be a take on the Galaxy Note Edge’s “bent” display, which only comes with one curved edge on the display, and if Samsung ups the ante on its bent display tech, that could mean more types of information viewable on the Galaxy S6’s sides.

On a more fundamental note, most are expecting QHD (2560 x 1440) display resolution on the Galaxy S6, which would be an improvement over the Galaxy S5’s Full HD (1080p) display, and the same resolution as that on the Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge.

Speaking of those nitty-gritty specs, SamMobile reported recently that the Galaxy S6 may also include a 16-megapixel or 20-megapixel rear camera with Optical Image Stabilization, 32/64/128 GB internal memory options, and the choice of a Snapdragon 810 processor (for the U.S.) or an Exynos 7420 (for the rest of the world), both with 64-bit technology. SamMobile has been quite accurate with rumors and these specs sound very plausible, but as we’ll explain below, it’s best to take the site’s report with a grain of salt for the meantime.

As a final disclaimer, we’d like to advise you not to take too much stock in these Galaxy S6 rumors just yet, even if they do come from credible sources. If the Galaxy S6 will arrive in March and get released in April, that still leaves four months to go before the launch, and Samsung is likely testing a variety of “mules” or prototypes before it decides on a production model to hit the streets. That means Samsung is possibly dealing with different sets of basic specifications and different special features, and it may not be until January or February before these spec and feature rumors really crystallize and hint at something more definite.

Furthermore, there are some specs and features that may miss the production models if they don’t pass muster with Samsung, and that’s a result of Samsung’s extensive testing process.
