Apple Secretly Killed Its Mac-Connected AR Glasses—Here’s Why the Project Never Saw the Light of Day

In a surprising turn of events, Apple has reportedly discontinued an ambitious project to create augmented reality glasses connected to Mac computers. Despite the high expectations and the innovative concept behind these AR glasses, they never made it past the development phase. According to sources, including a detailed report by Bloomberg, the project was shelved due to significant challenges in performance during executive testing sessions and ongoing changes to the device’s desired features.

A Vision Too Far?

The Apple AR glasses were poised to be a groundbreaking addition to the tech giant’s product line, aiming to integrate seamlessly with users’ daily lives. Unlike the Vision Pro, Apple’s existing AR headset, these glasses boasted a more conventional appearance, resembling typical eyewear but with advanced AR capabilities. Powered by visionOS, these glasses were not intended to replace the Vision Pro but rather to offer a distinct, more accessible alternative.

Bloomberg’s report highlights that Apple initially planned for the AR glasses to be powered by the iPhone. However, it became evident that the smartphone lacked the necessary processing power to support the glasses’ advanced features without significantly draining the battery. This led to a pivotal shift, with plans to link the glasses with Mac computers, aiming to leverage their superior processing capabilities.

Technological Hurdles and Strategic Shifts

The envisioned AR glasses included built-in displays capable of projecting information, images, and videos directly into the user’s field of view. They were designed to be lighter than the Vision Pro and featured tint-changing lenses that indicated whether the user was busy or available—a feature comparing favorably to other products in the market like XReal’s One glasses and Meta’s Orion prototype.

Despite these innovative aspects, the project encountered several obstacles. One major issue was the underutilization of the Vision Pro by existing customers, which cast doubts on the market readiness for another similar product. Furthermore, insiders suggested that the project suffered from a lack of clear direction and focus, leading to its eventual cancellation.

Future Prospects in Augmented Reality

While the AR glasses project has been set aside, Apple is not stepping back from augmented reality technology. The company continues to work on a successor to the Vision Pro and explore other AR-related technologies. Insights from the development of the now-canceled glasses, especially the advancements in microLED screen technology, are expected to influence future Apple products.

The cancellation of Apple’s Mac-connected AR glasses project is a setback for those eagerly anticipating another innovative product from the tech leader. However, it also underscores the immense challenges tech companies face in pioneering new technologies.
