“These AI models run completely on-device, alerting users in the event of a likely scam,” Google asserts. This approach ensures that personal conversations remain private, with the option for users to dismiss, report, or block the scammer if suspicious activity is detected.

Google reassures users that their privacy is paramount. Conversations remain confidential unless a user decides to report a scam, at which point only the sender’s details and recent messages are shared with Google and associated carriers. This feature is enabled by default for numbers not listed in the user’s contacts, providing a proactive approach to security.
Phased Rollout and Future Expansion
Initially launching in English in the U.S., the U.K., and Canada, this feature is set to see a broader rollout in the future. Additionally, Google has expanded similar scam detection capabilities to phone calls, specifically for English-speaking Pixel 9+ users in the U.S., enhancing user control over their digital interactions.
“If enabled, Scam Detection will beep at the start and during the call to notify participants the feature is on,” mentions Google. This alert system provides transparency and allows users to opt out of Scam Detection during an individual call or disable it completely for future interactions.
