The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a severe warning about Diamond Shruumz-brand microdosing chocolate bars after multiple reports of adverse health effects spanning four states. Consumers who ingested these chocolates reported severe symptoms including seizures, central nervous system depression, and abnormal heart rates.
This alarming situation has led to the hospitalization of six out of eight affected individuals.
FDA Appeals to Youth: A Risky Temptation
Marketed as a sweet treat with health benefits, these chocolate bars contain a “primo proprietary blend of nootropic and functional mushrooms,” according to the company’s website. The FDA has criticized the use of the term nootropics, which it describes as widely used to market unapproved products as ‘smart drugs’ and ‘cognitive enhancers.’
The appeal of such products to younger demographics is particularly concerning, prompting the FDA to advise parents and caregivers to be vigilant. The agency’s latest advisory stresses the importance of keeping these products out of the reach of children and teenagers, who might be drawn to the candy-like appearance and supposed benefits.
Symptoms and Safety Concerns
The range of symptoms reported by victims is extensive and worrying. Victims have experienced everything from hyper/hypotension and nausea to vomiting and agitation.
“While these products claim to contain only natural ingredients and no scheduled drugs, there is something toxic occurring,” explained Steve Dudley, director of the Arizona Poison and Drug Information Center. The center noted that some victims required intubation after losing consciousness—a dire indicator of the product’s potential dangers.
An Ongoing Investigation
As of the latest updates, the FDA continues to investigate the exact cause of these illnesses. The distribution of these chocolate bars remains broad, with availability both online and at various retail locations nationwide, although a complete list of retailers has yet to be disclosed by the FDA.
Community and Expert Reactions
The last reported case occurred on June 3, with incidents recorded in Indiana, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Arizona. Community members and health experts alike have expressed their concerns. The Banner Poison and Drug Information Center in Arizona has been actively involved in treating the victims and has issued warnings about the severe risks associated with consuming these chocolate bars.
In response to inquiries, CBS reached out to Diamond Shruumz for comment but has not received a response at the time of reporting.
A Call for Caution
The FDA’s warning is a stark reminder of the need for cautious consumption of products containing substances like nootropics. Consumers are urged to stay informed and prioritize safety, especially when products are capable of causing such severe health reactions. Parents and guardians, in particular, are encouraged to discuss these risks with their families to prevent further incidents.
