“The biggest factor for Californians who qualify for the program is the recertification process. CalFresh has lost many eligible participants who failed to go through the documentation to qualify again for benefits,” Beene explained in an interview with Newsweek. He stressed the importance of meeting the deadline, especially for those who missed applying last year.
What Happens If You Miss the Deadline?
Failing to submit the recertification application before the end of the certification period can lead to temporary interruptions in benefits. Once recertified, benefits are reloaded onto beneficiaries’ EBT (Electronic Benefits Transfer) cards, which function like debit cards and can be used at most supermarkets for eligible food products.
For June 2024, the range of CalFresh benefits can vary significantly—from up to $291 for a single person to as much as $1,751 for a household of eight, reflecting the program’s flexibility and responsiveness to diverse needs.
Kevin Thompson, a finance expert and founder and CEO of 9i Capital Group, noted the broader challenges facing SNAP amid federal budget cuts. “Applying to continue your benefits on a timely basis is especially important as Congress has voted to reduce government spending on SNAP in recent years,” Thompson told Newsweek.
He also pointed out that many individuals eligible for CalFresh often forgo the benefits entirely, which complicates efforts to gauge the program’s reach and effectiveness.
Thompson warns of the practical implications of missing the deadline: “This may lead to lengthy wait times and additional documentation is needed,” he said. “It is important to certify on time and promptly to receive your benefits without interruption.”
