In a retail landscape where speed and convenience are increasingly prioritized by consumers, Sams Club is leading the charge with its innovative AI-powered verification technology. Recently rolled out to over 120 locations across the United States, this cutting-edge technology has successfully enhanced the shopping experience by eliminating the need for traditional receipt checks at exit doors.
The Tech Revolution at Sams Club
Originally showcased at the Consumer Electronics Show in January, Sams Club’s futuristic verification system began with pilot tests in a select few clubs. It has since expanded significantly, now available in areas including Texas, the Southwest, and parts of the South and Midwest.
With plans to introduce this technology in additional Southern and Midwestern stores soon, Sams Club is on a fast track to revolutionize retail shopping. This technology leverages the Sams Club app’s Scan and Go feature, which allows customers to scan and pay for items directly within the app as they shop.
When exiting, shoppers simply pass through a blue gateway, where cameras capture images of the cart contents and instantly verify them against the purchase list in the app. This seamless process helps customers leave the store up to 23% faster, according to the company.
Todd Garner, Sams Club’s Chief Product Officer, highlighted the impact of this new system, stating, “Both exit technology and Scan & Go are driving new levels of convenience and raising member satisfaction among members.
What distinguishes Sams Club from our competitors is our ability to seamlessly deploy this technology at scale across our nearly 600 clubs nationwide.”

Comparisons and Competitions
While Sams Club is expanding its high-tech checkout solutions, competitors like Amazon have taken a different route. Earlier this month, The Information revealed that Amazon is scaling back its Just Walk Out (JWO) technology in larger grocery stores, opting instead for sensor-equipped Dash Carts in smaller locations.
This shift emphasizes the challenges of applying such technologies on a larger scale, a challenge that Sams Club seems to be meeting head-on.
Megan Crozier, Sams Club’s Chief Merchant in the US, expressed confidence in their system during a CES presentation, “It’s one thing to enable this easy kind of exit tech in a small-footprint store for a handful of items, but we’re doing it at scale.”
The Future of Shopping
With the success of its AI-powered verification gates, Sams Club is not only speeding up the checkout process but also setting a new standard in retail technology.
The plan to deploy these gates to all 599 US locations by year’s end could mark a significant shift in how retail environments operate, emphasizing speed, efficiency, and customer satisfaction.
As the retail sector continues to evolve, technologies like those being implemented by Sams Club are paving the way for a smoother, more enjoyable shopping experience. Shoppers can look forward to less time at checkout and more time enjoying their purchases, which could well become the new norm in the competitive retail market.
