Brightline West is powering ahead with an ambitious plan to link Las Vegas and California through a high-speed rail that promises to revolutionize travel between these two dynamic regions. Siemens Mobility, a heavyweight in the rail manufacturing industry, has been named the preferred supplier, setting the stage for a pivotal shift in American transportation.
Siemens Mobility to Deliver Cutting-Edge High-Speed Trains
In a significant announcement on May 1, Brightline West declared Siemens Mobility as the preferred bidder to supply state-of-the-art electric trainsets capable of reaching speeds up to 355 km/h. The order, pending finalization, includes 10 American Pioneer 220 trainsets, drawing from Siemens’ highly successful Velaro family.
These seven-car trainsets will sport ‘ultrawide’ carbodies and accommodate between 434 and 450 passengers, depending on the final interior design chosen.
Michael Reininger, CEO of Brightline, emphasized the transformative potential of the project, stating, “The momentum we are building will culminate in new jobs and a new supply chain, establishing the foundation for a coast-to-coast high-speed rail industry.”
A little late on this, but I just saw the great news that Bright Line West just broke ground on the High-Speed Train from California to Las Vegas!
With the constant smear campaign auto companies do against trains, I’m very glad to see that this project made it through! pic.twitter.com/PU3EVuS4Nj

A New Industry Hub in Sloan, Nevada
Underpinning this landmark deal is a 30-year maintenance contract, with operations based out of a dedicated facility in Sloan, Nevada. The strategic choice of location is not only poised to enhance operational efficiency but also significantly contribute to the local economy through job creation and technological advancement.
The construction of the AP220 trainsets will adhere strictly to the Buy America requirements, promising a boost to the American manufacturing sector. This move is expected to lay the groundwork for the U.S. to forge a new frontier in high-speed rail technology, challenging established players globally.
Bridging Las Vegas and California with High-Speed Rail
Brightline West’s initiative stands out with its planned 351 km high-speed line, which will connect Las Vegas with Rancho Cucamonga, east of Los Angeles. This corridor aims to drastically reduce travel times and set a new standard in domestic transportation, leveraging advancements in speed and comfort to enhance the passenger experience.
The project saw its ceremonial beginning on April 22, marking a significant milestone not just for Brightline West but for American rail travel. Marc Buncher, CEO of Siemens Mobility North America, reflected on the project’s significance, asserting, “The high-speed chapter of America’s rail story will build on Siemens’ 40 years of experience in designing and delivering top-tier rail solutions in the U.S.”
A Future Aligned with Interoperability and Innovation
The vision for the Brightline West rail extends beyond immediate connectivity. With an eye towards future growth, plans are in place for the trainsets to be fully interoperable with other high-speed rail projects, including the separate California high-speed rail initiative, anticipated to start services between 2030 and 2033.
This development is not just about connecting two points with high-speed rail but about setting a precedent for American innovation in high-speed transportation. Siemens’ commitment to this vision was clear when Buncher highlighted the project as “one of the most pivotal moments in the history of American rail.”
As Brightline West and Siemens Mobility forge ahead, the excitement builds for what will be America’s first true high-speed rail journey, promising a new era of travel not just for California and Nevada, but for the entire nation.
The rail industry and its observers are watching closely, anticipating the transformative impact this project is poised to have on the American transportation landscape.
