In a significant move to heighten passenger security, Uber has unveiled an upgraded suite of safety tools designed to offer customizable features, fostering a safer and more secure riding experience. This latest enhancement enables users to easily access and modify settings such as PIN verification and the ShareMyTrip function to suit their individual security needs.
Revolutionizing Ride Safety: Uber’s New Tools and Features
Uber’s dedication to passenger safety has taken a quantum leap with the introduction of a new safety preferences section in its app. This initiative not only simplifies the process of managing safety tools but also allows users to automate their activation based on specific times and locations.

The updated safety features include advanced options like audio recording, which stores trip audio for Uber’s investigative use, and PIN verification to confirm the correctness of the vehicle you board. Additionally, Uber’s ShareMyTrip feature lets passengers share their live location and ride details with trusted contacts. An innovative addition, RideCheck, alerts Uber if a ride deviates unexpectedly from its intended route.
Uber users now have the flexibility to activate these features for every ride or tailor them according to personal preferences. For example, passengers might choose to enable ShareMyTrip exclusively on weekends or after 9 PM, or activate PIN verification within proximity to particular venues.
Customizing Your Safety Experience with Uber
To personalize your safety settings in the Uber app, navigate to your Account page, click on “Safety checkup,” and then select “Start setup” under “Safety preferences.” From this point, you can determine the extent to which you wish to schedule these preferences—be it for all, some, or no rides at all. Moreover, during a ride, tapping on the blue shield icon in the Safety Toolkit allows for immediate adjustment of safety preferences.
Currently available in the US, Canada, and Latin America, Uber plans to roll out these enhanced safety measures to additional regions in the upcoming months.
Addressing Nighttime Safety Concerns
The introduction of these enhanced safety tools comes at a crucial time. Recent statistics reveal that 53% of women feel unsafe walking alone near their homes after dark. Uber’s efforts are particularly significant in the context of nightlife safety, providing reassurance for those going on dates or returning from late-night gatherings.
Data underscores the urgency of such innovations, with Uber’s latest safety report documenting 9,805 incidents of sexual assault and 852 rape reports between 2017 and 2020. Despite these alarming figures, Uber has noted a 38 percent reduction in sexual assaults since its first safety report in 2018, underscoring the impact of its continuous efforts to safeguard passengers.
These safety concerns affect not only passengers but also drivers. Reports from The Verge highlight how some female drivers have created buddy systems via local Facebook groups to enhance their safety. Michelle Dottin, a driver and advocate, emphasized the need for comprehensive safety measures that cater to both drivers and passengers.
Uber’s new safety preferences represent a pivotal development in its ongoing commitment to enhancing passenger and driver security. As these tools become more integrated into everyday use, the hope is that they will significantly mitigate risks and foster a safer, more trusting environment for all users.
